Mom Tip: Kids & Technology

March 23rd, 2011

Caution Parents: Your kids may be more technologically advanced then you think! Parenting.com has a fun story about how a boy accidentally spent $1,400 on his mom’s iPhone.

This is not as uncommon as you may think. The author of this article found it disturbingly easy to rack up a bill while playing a popular games, not noticing the hidden fees and that buying games points meant spending real money. Our children are taught as early as Pre-school how to use and operate a computer. The accessibility and easy operation of iPhones, iPads, and other new devices is attracting the attention of children- And why not? Mot of the new product resemble their hand-held video gaming systems. It doesn’t help that there is literally an app for almost any game you can imagine. If your kids can play a video game on the computer or hand-held game, they can easily use an iPhone.

“Parents need to know that the promotion of games and the delivery mechanism for them are deceptively cheap. But basically people are trying to make money off these apps, which is a huge problem, and only going to get bigger because mobile apps are the new platform for kids.”

Making sure that your device is locked with a password or security feature is one sure way to keep little hands off of your phone. Hopefully this story is as informative as it is funny.
